Durango, Colorado

The phrase "outdoor lifestyle" probably best sums up life in very-cool Durango, Colorado.  The town preserves an aura of the Old West, mixed with a laid-back, outdoor adventure oriented, young population (Fort Lewis College is here).   Kayaking and  mountain biking are king, performed mostly by tan, trim and fit people.  Several bike rental stores invite visitors to take a cycling tour of town and the surrounding area.

And if you are truly brave, take the San Juan Skyway (Route 550) north out of town to the historic mining towns Silverton and Ouray.  Three mountain passes, heights of 11,000 feet and higher, breathtaking scenery, hairpin curves and no guardrails make this an exhilarating (and sometimes white-knuckle) drive (not one really recommended for flatlanders)!   If you are into outdoor adventure, enjoy rigorous winters and small mountain towns, consider funky Durango.
